A Banyan Drive Landmark, Rebuilt With Intent

Banyan Drive curves along the water on the eastern edge of Hilo, shaded by the row of banyans that visiting dignitaries planted along it, and its hotels have long been the town's front row on the bay. SCP Hilo occupies one of them. Rather than add another beach resort to an island that has plenty, Soul Community Planet took a property of 128 rooms and rebuilt it around a single premise: that a hotel can be pleasant to stay in and defensible to have built. The materials are regionally sourced, the planting is tropical rather than manicured, and the result reads less like a renovation than like a change of mind.

Why It Works

Three things carry it. The position first: this is the water side of Banyan Drive, with Reeds Bay and the koi pond in front of the premium rooms and Liliuokalani Gardens at the end of the street. Then the wellness offer, which is equipment rather than signage, with Peloton bikes, TRX and weights in the fitness studio and bicycles and stand-up paddleboards lent to guests at no charge. And finally the environmental record, which is measured rather than asserted: this is the first hotel in Hawaii to hold EarthCheck Silver Benchmarked status, and it holds a place in the Michelin Guide hotel selection, which is rare on this side of the island.

Why This Location

Hilo is the green, working, rain-fed side of the Big Island, and staying here means choosing gardens and waterfalls over the sun-reliable Kona coast. The trade is a good one if the volcano is the point of the trip. Liliuokalani Gardens, the Japanese garden with its arched bridges and stone lanterns, is a walk away, and the footbridge to Coconut Island leaves from its edge. Downtown Hilo, its farmers market and its shopfronts sit a short drive west. Rainbow Falls is inland, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park lies south along the highway, and Hilo's airport is close enough that arrival day is not lost to driving.

What Regenerative Means Here in Practice

The word gets used loosely in hospitality, so it is worth saying what sits behind it on this property. EarthCheck Silver Benchmarked status is an audited standard, not a self-declaration, and no other hotel in the state had reached it first. In the rooms it shows up as regionally sourced materials and as the absence of the small disposables resorts still hand out. In the building it shows up in the choice to rework what was already standing on Banyan Drive rather than clear a new site.

The Kit You Do Not Have to Rent

Most Big Island itineraries involve a rental counter at some point. Here the bicycles and the stand-up paddleboards belong to the hotel and go out to guests, which changes how an afternoon gets planned: Reeds Bay is in front of the property and the gardens are at the end of the road, so a paddle or a ride becomes a decision made after breakfast rather than a booking made in advance. SCP Fit covers the rest, with Peloton bikes, TRX, weights and mats.

Using Hilo as a Base

This is a hotel for people who intend to leave it during the day. The volcano is the obvious draw and the drive south is straightforward, but the eastern side rewards the smaller detours too: the waterfalls above town, the coastline north toward Hamakua, the market in the morning. Come back wet, which happens in Hilo, and there is a pool in the planting, a fitness studio and a market counter that never closes.
